Energy Saving Through Remote Monitoring System for Senior Centers in Seongbuk-gu

If No Senior Center Users, Power Off Heating/Cooling Devices and Lights to Prevent Energy Waste
Elders' Convenience Enhanced by Remote Control of Indoor Temperature and Lighting from Central Control Center Without Their Attention

Energy Saving Through Remote Monitoring System for Senior Centers in Seongbuk-gu

Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) announced that earlier this month, it installed a remote system (SEMS) to efficiently manage energy consumption at 17 district-run senior centers to provide a comfortable environment for the elderly.

Senior centers often waste unnecessary energy when the last person leaving fails to turn off heating/cooling devices or lights. Especially in winter, boilers were sometimes turned off to save heating costs, causing seniors to endure cold indoor temperatures for a long time the next morning.

In response, the district introduced a remote control system for lighting, air conditioners, and heating devices in 17 senior centers. The central control center adjusts indoor temperatures to reduce energy waste, maintaining comfortable temperatures without requiring seniors to manage them, thus increasing convenience. Additionally, fire detection sensors enable 24-hour monitoring of emergency situations, ensuring the safety of the senior centers.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “With both electricity and gas prices rising, we have introduced a remote control system in senior centers to prevent unnecessary energy waste and provide a more comfortable and pleasant space for the elderly. We will continue to lead the adoption of various technologies in senior centers to improve energy efficiency.”

Meanwhile, Seongbuk-gu was selected through a public contest for the Green Remodeling project by the Korea Land and Housing Safety Corporation and plans to carry out energy performance improvement construction on one aging district-run senior center in 2024, contributing to carbon neutrality and reducing gas emissions.
