Domestic Cement Cumulative Production Surpasses 2 Billion Tons... Equivalent to 100 Million Units of 30-Pyeong Apartments

Korea Cement Association to Release Statistics on 25th
66 Years Since Official Tally Began in 1958

The cumulative cement production volume in the domestic cement industry has surpassed 2 billion tons. This amount is enough to build 100 million apartments of approximately 30 pyeong in size.

The Korea Cement Association announced on the 25th that the cumulative domestic production volume based on general cement reached 2,000,087,378 tons by the end of 2022. This marks 66 years since official statistics began being compiled in 1958.

The cumulative production volume of the seven major companies?Sampyo Cement, Ssangyong C&E, Hanil Cement, Asia Cement, Sungshin Cement, Hanil Hyundai Cement, and Halla Cement?was confirmed to be about 1.85 billion tons. Additionally, the cumulative production volume of companies such as Koryo, Korea C&T, and Daehan Cement was estimated at approximately 150 million tons.

A representative from the Korea Cement Association explained, “The cement industry began full-scale reconstruction amid the scars of the Korean War, producing about 260,000 tons in 1958. By 1964, it succeeded in producing 1 million tons annually. Since then, the cement industry experienced rapid growth during South Korea’s economic development period, achieving a cumulative 10 million tons in just three years by 1967, and surpassing 100 million tons 11 years later in 1978.”

Although the cement industry suffered significant damage from the IMF financial crisis, it surpassed 1 billion tons in 2003 and reached 2 billion tons in 2022, more than 20 years later. When converting the cumulative production of 2 billion tons into the amount of cement used to build one apartment unit (approximately 30 pyeong) at 20 tons per unit, it is enough to construct about 100 million apartment units.

A representative from the Korea Cement Association stated, “This achievement is the result of continuous quality improvement efforts supported by the stable supply of high-quality natural raw materials such as limestone and competition among companies. We will continue to make greater efforts to produce cement necessary for improving the quality of life for the public by successfully overcoming imminent challenges such as achieving greenhouse gas reduction required for carbon neutrality.”
