On the Third Day of 'Heavy Snow Warning,' Gwangju and Jeonnam Continue to Experience Ice Road Accidents

Heavy Snowfall in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju 26cm and Jangseong 21.5cm

KMA "Up to 10cm More Expected Until Morning"

Since the 22nd, the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions have experienced snowfall of up to 26 cm, leading to a series of accidents both large and small.


According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on the 24th, a heavy snow warning has been in effect for three consecutive days since the 22nd in Gwangju and Jeonnam.


The snowfall measured until the morning of that day was 26 cm in Gwangju Gwangsan-gu, 21.6 cm in Jeonnam Jangseong, 18 cm in Hampyeong Wolya, 17 cm in Muan, 16 cm in Heuksan, and 15 cm in Naju.


The heavy snowfall over the three days has resulted in a series of accidents.

At around 6:45 a.m. that day, a collision occurred between a bus and a passenger car in Wanggok-myeon, Naju-si, and at 4:30 a.m. in Munnae-myeon, Haenam-gun, a pedestrian slipped on an icy road and was transported to the hospital.


At 10:13 p.m. the previous day, a vehicle crashed into a traffic light in Hwasun-eup, Hwasun-gun, and at around 5:17 p.m., a vehicle slipped and fell in Haenam-eup, Haenam-gun.


Also, at 1:51 p.m., a vehicle fell into a roadside ditch in Bukpyeong-myeon, Haenam-gun, but the driver escaped on their own, so no major casualties occurred.


In Gwangju as well, at around 11:50 p.m. the previous day, a pedestrian slipped and fell in Maegok-dong, Buk-gu, injuring their wrist and other areas, and at 8:16 p.m., another pedestrian slip accident occurred in Dongnim-dong, Buk-gu.


From the 22nd until the morning of that day, the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters received 57 reports of safety accidents, and the Gwangju Fire Headquarters received a total of 50 accident reports.


In Gwangju, 35 city bus routes (268 buses) are operating on detours or shortened routes. In Jeonnam, eight roads have been closed.


Among 80 vessels on 53 passenger ship routes, 61 vessels on 43 routes were canceled, and seven flights to and from Yeosu Airport were canceled. Entry to some national parks such as Mudeungsan, Naejangsan, Wolchulsan, and Dadohae has also been restricted.


The Meteorological Administration expects the snow to stop by the morning of that day. The expected snowfall is 3 to 10 cm in Gwangju and western Jeonnam, and about 1 cm in eastern Jeonnam.


The daytime temperature that day is forecast to be between -1°C and 3°C, higher than the previous day (-3.9°C to -0.2°C).


The lowest temperature tomorrow morning is expected to be between -8°C and -1°C. The highest daytime temperature will range from 1°C to 5°C, recovering to above freezing.
