Accounts for 70% of National Production
Competition at September 'Yongin Citizen Festa'
Chingkyungchae, native to the Huazhong region of China, is an essential ingredient in Chinese cuisine. It has also gained popularity domestically and is cultivated in South Korea.
Where is the largest cultivation area of Chingkyungchae in South Korea? It is Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, accounting for 70% of the national production. As of last year, 169 farms in the Yongin area produced 12,797 tons of Chingkyungchae.

Yongin-si is holding a unique competition to expand the market for Chingkyungchae. At the upcoming local representative festival, 'Yongin Citizen Festa,' held in September, a 'Chingkyungchae Kimchi Contest' will be hosted.
The city recently announced on the 23rd that it secured 50 million KRW in funding by applying for the Gyeonggi-do-led project, 'Tell Your Own Kimchi Linked to Local Festivals.' This year, at the Yongin Citizen Festa, the city plans to promote kimchi made with Chingkyungchae through events such as the Chingkyungchae Kimchi Contest, Chingkyungchae Kimchi Making, and Chingkyungchae Kimchi and Boiled Pork Tasting Sessions.
The Yongin Citizen Festa is an integrated festival where attendees can enjoy the 'Yongin Citizen Day' event, Cyber Science Festival, Youth Festival, and Food Industry Expo all in one place. Last year, 40,000 citizens visited the event.
A Yongin-si official said, "We decided to hold this event to discover various recipes and expand the market for Chingkyungchae, a specialty product of the Yongin area," adding, "We also plan to widely promote the fact that Yongin is the representative production area of Chingkyungchae."
