Yangcheon-gu, Installation of Elevator for Mobility-Impaired at Dong Office Building

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) is investing a total of over 1.7 billion KRW to promote the "Dong Office Elevator Environment Improvement Project" to enhance the convenience of walking-vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities and the elderly in using the community service centers.

The project targets three districts: Sinjeong 6-dong, Mok 5-dong, and Sinjeong 7-dong. First, the Sinjeong 6-dong Community Service Center (from basement level 1 to 3rd floor above ground) is an aging building over 35 years old without an elevator, causing significant inconvenience to elderly people, residents with young children, and people with disabilities who use the library rooms and community hall programs on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

Accordingly, after conducting a structural safety inspection and about 12 months of project duration, a new elevator accessible to people with disabilities was newly installed outside the Sinjeong 6-dong building and opened on the 15th of this month.

In addition, the project included renovation of the accessible restrooms and ramps, significantly lowering the barriers to use.

Next, in February, an additional elevator installation at the Mok 5-dong Community Service Center is expected to be completed. Mok 5-dong Community Service Center operates the largest scale of community hall programs compared to other districts, with about 600 residents using it. The building has floors from basement level 2 to 6th floor above ground, but there was only one elevator inside, causing long waiting times and difficulty meeting user demand. Therefore, the district plans to install one more elevator outside the Mok 5-dong Community Service Center to improve mobility convenience for lifelong learning students.

Similarly, at the Sinjeong 7-dong Community Service Center, which previously had no elevator, a new elevator accessible to people with disabilities is expected to be completed in April, allowing convenient access up to the 3rd floor.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, "I hope this Dong Office Elevator Environment Improvement Project will help improve the convenience of facility use and mobility for our residents even a little," and added, "We will continue to strive to improve facilities so that residents can use community service centers more conveniently and safely in the future."
