Strengthened Inspections for Small-Scale Farms Vulnerable to Disease Control
Sacheon City in Gyeongnam Province is strengthening quarantine measures to block the entry of African Swine Fever (ASF) during the high-risk winter season.
Just two days after the first confirmed case of ASF at a pig farm in Yeongdeok County, Gyeongbuk Province on the 16th, new cases have emerged at pig farms in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, signaling a renewed spread and raising nationwide livestock quarantine alarms.
In particular, two cases of ASF virus infection were confirmed within a month in wild boars captured recently in Busan, posing a serious threat to pig farms in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions.
Accordingly, Sacheon City is intensifying inspections targeting small-scale farms vulnerable to quarantine breaches, deploying joint disinfection teams and city quarantine vehicles to conduct focused disinfection of livestock farms and adjacent roads as a preemptive measure.
Additionally, the city plans to prevent ASF entry by promoting farm quarantine guidelines and distributing disinfectants and wildlife repellents within the region.
With the Lunar New Year holiday approaching, a period of frequent human and material exchanges and increased ASF entry risk, the city is maintaining an emergency response system and promptly disseminating outbreak information to related departments, agencies, and organizations for urgent quarantine actions.
Kwon Sang-hyun, Director of Sacheon Agricultural Technology Center, stated, “ASF virus has been detected in wild boars nationwide, and the affected areas are expanding. We urge pig farmers to strictly adhere to basic quarantine rules.”
