The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters is strengthening fire safety management in densely populated small factory areas to prevent factory fires during the winter season.
The Fire and Disaster Headquarters will first select densely populated areas among small factories with high fire risk by each fire station and conduct focused on-site inspections of fire safety management status and fire risk factors.
The main inspection items include ▲hazardous materials left unattended in the workplace ▲closure or blockage of fire safety facilities ▲use of outdated electrical wiring ▲excessive use of heating devices in dormitories ▲fire truck access conditions in case of emergency ▲and nearby fire water facilities.
In addition, fire station chiefs will conduct fire safety consultations with related parties at least once a week, encourage the priority installation of basic fire safety facilities in dormitories, and strengthen preventive activities such as eliminating fire risk factors.
Furthermore, local adaptation training will be conducted using satellite images from internet portal services to pre-assess terrain conditions around industrial complexes and fire truck access routes, along with campaigns to inform related parties about fire prevention.
According to the Fire and Disaster Headquarters, a total of 4,336 factory fires occurred in the Gyeonggi area from 2019 to 2023, with 1,334 cases (31%) occurring during the winter months (December to February).
By cause, electrical factors accounted for 30%, the highest proportion, followed by carelessness (27%), mechanical factors (24%), and unknown causes (9%).
