Passed in the plenary session without Yeo's attendance
Yoon may also exercise veto power
The National Assembly has forwarded the "Special Act on Guaranteeing the Rights of Victims of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster, Fact-Finding, and Prevention of Recurrence" (Itaewon Disaster Special Act) to the government.
The bill includes provisions to establish and operate a special investigation committee composed of 17 members recommended by the National Assembly Investigation Committee Recommendation Committee to investigate the facts of the Itaewon disaster that occurred on October 29, 2022.
On the 9th, the bill was passed through a vote in the plenary session attended only by opposition party members, including the Democratic Party. At that time, the People Power Party opposed the bill, citing reasons such as the inability to guarantee fairness in forming the special investigation committee, and did not participate in the vote.
The ruling People Power Party held a party meeting the day before and decided to recommend President Yoon Seok-yeol to exercise the veto power (request for reconsideration). The Presidential Office is also expected to possibly exercise veto power on the Itaewon Disaster Special Act.
