Hygiene Inspections at 50 Livestock Product Vendors in Traditional Markets and Large Marts from Jan 22-31 Ahead of Holiday with Surging Meat Consumption
Inspection Scope Expanded to Businesses Around Traditional Markets to Address Livestock Product Management Blind Spots
‘Livestock Product Safety Tests’ for Suspected Hanwoo Fraud, Pork Origin Kit Inspections Focused on Large Companies
Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that from January 22 to 31, it will conduct a "Livestock Product Handling Business Hygiene Inspection and Sampling Test" targeting 50 traditional markets and large supermarkets to establish a sound and clean distribution transaction order ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, a period of rapidly increasing meat consumption.
The inspection team, composed of honorary livestock product hygiene monitors and public officials, plans to focus on inspecting the hygiene status and the distribution of illegal livestock products at 50 selected locations with high direct consumer purchases, including butcher shops in major traditional markets such as Mokdong Kkaebi, Woljeong-ro, Gyeongchang Market, and meat sections in large supermarkets.
In particular, the district expanded the inspection targets to include not only internal business sites within traditional markets but also external livestock product handling businesses near the markets to eliminate blind spots in livestock product management.
The main inspection items will focus on ▲ storage, display, and sale of products past their expiration date ▲ storage and sale of spoiled or deteriorated livestock products ▲ compliance with preservation and distribution standards for refrigerated and frozen products ▲ fraudulent sale disguised as domestic Korean beef (Hanwoo) ▲ and adherence to the livestock product traceability system.
Additionally, if fraudulent sale of Hanwoo is suspected, a "Livestock Product Safety Test" will be conducted simultaneously to check Hanwoo genetic identity, DNA matching, and residual antibiotics to crack down on illegal livestock products. For pork, rapid on-site "origin identification kits" will be used mainly at large companies.
If minor violations of laws and regulations are found during the inspection, corrective guidance will be given, while serious illegal matters will be strictly dealt with according to relevant laws.
Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, "Ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, when meat demand surges, we will conduct thorough livestock product hygiene inspections to build a sound distribution environment where residents can purchase with confidence."
