Dongjak-gu to Radically Change Urban Aesthetics... Call for Signboard Improvement Sites

Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) is promoting the '2024 Signboard Improvement Project Site Contest' to create pleasant and beautiful streets.

This project was established to secure residents' safety from hazardous facilities by organizing illegally and disorderly proliferated illegal and old signboards, and to improve the urban landscape.

The district plans to select about 70 businesses located in densely populated areas with high foot traffic and areas concentrated with livelihood-type signboards as project sites.

Up to 3 million KRW per business will be supported for the cost of removing illegal advertisements and producing and installing creative signboards reflecting the characteristics of the area and stores.

Eligibility requires a resident or organization representing 30 or more adjacent stores agreeing to the signboard improvement. However, ▲ those receiving administrative support for the same project content ▲ organizations and corporations operating similar projects for profit are restricted.

Applications are accepted until February 2. Applicants can download the application forms from the district website, fill them out, and submit them in person to the Construction Administration Division of Dongjak-gu Office (74 Noryangjin-ro, 5th floor of Yuhan Yanghaeng).

In February, a committee will evaluate the necessity and feasibility of the project and individually notify the selected organizations.

The district has continuously promoted outdoor advertising maintenance and improvement projects, having been selected as an excellent district for three consecutive years in the outdoor advertising quality evaluation conducted for 25 autonomous districts in Seoul last year.

Last November, through the Heukseok-ro signboard improvement project, 99 stores in front of Chung-Ang University had their old signboards replaced with LED designs, and 251 illegal signboards were removed.

Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, “This signboard improvement project is expected not only to create pleasant and safe streets but also to help revitalize the local commercial district. We will continue to pursue various policies to create a distinctive urban landscape unique to Dongjak.”
