Special Inspection Conducted for 2 Weeks
The Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Head: Gong Heungdu) will conduct a special inspection to reduce major accidents for two weeks from the 17th to the 31st, following a series of fatal accidents at industrial sites in the jurisdiction.
In Busan's industrial sites, 10 major accidents occurred over the recent three weeks ('23.12.20~'24.1.14). When reflecting the number of occurrences against actual working days, fatal accidents happened at a rate of one person every two days. By industry, construction had the highest number of fatalities (5 people), and by accident type, falls were the most frequent (7 people).
Accordingly, the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency will select regions and industries with frequent fatal accidents based on industrial accident statistics and conduct focused inspections.
For the focused inspection targets, in construction, 450 sites under 2 billion KRW and over 12 billion KRW in four districts with many major accidents last year (Haeundae-gu, Geumjeong-gu, Yeongdo-gu, Gangseo-gu) will be inspected. For manufacturing and service industries, 161 workplaces possessing hazardous and dangerous machinery and cranes within Busan will be inspected.
Additionally, for shipbuilding, 55 shipbuilding workplaces and repair shipyards located in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam areas, selected through analysis of fatal accidents over the past five years, will be inspected.
The special inspection will focus on preventing fall accidents, which are frequent, and will check safety and health measures for the three major accident types (falling, being caught, collision) and eight major risk factors (scaffolding, roofs, ladders, elevated work platforms, etc.). Workplaces with poor related measures will be requested for supervision by local offices.
Gong Heungdu, head of the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, stated, "Unlike the monthly surprise patrol inspections, this special inspection will focus on workplaces daily for two weeks," and added, "We hope all members of industrial sites maintain vigilance regarding the recent frequent fatal accidents in Busan and comply with basic safety and health rules."
