Yeongyang-gun, 1st Yeongyang Kkongkkong Winter Festival Bustling with Crowds

The ‘1st Yeongyang Kkongkkong Winter Festival,’ co-hosted by Yeongyang County (Governor O Do-chang) and the County Sports Council, is being held from the 5th to the 21st at the ice rink in Hyeon-ri, Yeongyang-eup, Yeongyang County, and the venue is bustling with crowds despite the cold weather.

While many winter festivals have been canceled one after another due to unusually high temperatures, the Hyeon-ri ice rink has maintained an ice thickness of over 20 cm daily, allowing the ‘Kkongkkong Winter Festival’ to proceed safely.

Previously operating only a free skating rink, the Hyeon-ri ice rink added various programs this year for the Kkongkkong Festival, including a snow sledding area, a rotating snow sledding area, ice fishing for smelt, and smelt catching experiences. It has received favorable reviews as a winter festival that satisfies all five senses with various food offerings, magic shows, face painting, and various experiential programs.

On the 11th day of the festival, more than 10,000 people visited, and over 6,000 tourists visited just last weekend as word of mouth began to spread.

It is recommended to warmly conclude this winter at the ‘1st Yeongyang Kkongkkong Winter Festival,’ which will end after this weekend.

Based on the successful festival operation know-how gained this year, Yeongyang County plans to design a ‘winter festival’ that visitors will want to return to next year, aiming to make the Kkongkkong Winter Festival a representative ‘winter festival’ of Yeongyang County and, further, of Gyeongbuk Province.
