Professor Ahn Young-geun of the Department of Cardiology at Chonnam National University Hospital has been elected as the next president of the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Interventions. Professor Ahn is the first professor from a non-metropolitan university hospital to be appointed as president of the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Interventions.
According to Chonnam National University Hospital on the 16th, Professor Ahn was recently appointed as the 15th president of the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Interventions at the 20th Winter International Scientific Meeting of the society held at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul. His term will be two years, from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026.
Since its founding in 1997, the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Interventions has been dedicated to interventional treatment and research of cardiovascular diseases for 26 years and is recognized as a leading society both domestically and internationally in the field of cardiovascular interventions.
As a renowned cardiologist and director of Chonnam National University Hospital, the next president Ahn Young-geun has built a network with many domestic and international cardiovascular intervention specialists since initiating the Gwangju Interventional Cardiovascular Symposium (GICS) in 2003. He has participated as an operator in world-class demonstration programs such as the Japanese Cardiovascular Intervention Society (CCT), Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Asia Pacific (TCT-AP), and ENCORE International Symposium.
In particular, President-elect Ahn has led various academic programs while serving as the academic director and director of information and public relations at the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Interventions, and has actively participated in major branches of the society, contributing to its growth.
He has also enhanced his applied expertise in various cardiovascular intervention fields by serving as chairman and president of the Korean Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis, and as president of the Basic Science Research Committee of the Korean Circulation Society. Recently, he gained significant attention by publishing research results in the field of cardiovascular interventions in world-renowned international journals such as Circulation and The Lancet through single-center and multicenter studies.
Leading global research, President-elect Ahn has been conducting basic and clinical research since 2002 and has consistently carried out national projects funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Thanks to his active research activities, he was elected as a full member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology in 2014 and has received numerous awards including the Minister of Health and Welfare Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Technology Research, election as a full member of the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, the Gwangju Citizen Award for Academic Achievement, and the Handok Academic Management Award.
President-elect Ahn stated, “Cardiovascular intervention is the most important treatment method for cardiovascular diseases and an essential medical practice directly linked to the lives of the people. I will contribute to making the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Interventions a globally competitive society that protects the health and lives of the nation.”
