Samsung Electronics' first AI phone series, the ‘Galaxy S24’, featuring AI technologies such as real-time interpretation and automatic image search, will be unveiled on the 17th (local time). It enhances user convenience with ‘on-device AI’ technology that allows various AI functions to be used directly on the device without needing an internet connection. Last week, Samsung also gave a sneak peek of the Galaxy S24 unpacking video at CES 2024, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA.
Breaking Language Barriers with AI Technology
The most notable innovation in the Galaxy S24 is the real-time interpretation and translation technology. The ‘Live Interpretation Call’ feature acts as a personal interpreter during phone calls, breaking down language barriers. With this feature, you don’t have to feel nervous when booking a local hotel by phone during overseas business trips or travel. Speaking in Korean will be instantly interpreted into English or other foreign languages for smooth communication.
Additionally, the call audio is transcribed into text on the screen and can be translated in real time into more than 10 languages. Since the data is processed within the device using on-device AI technology without being sent to external cloud servers, interpretation speed is expected to be fast and stable. Security is also highly rated because call content is not stored in any separate application (app).

Automatic Image Search... Text Summarization and Conversion
A technology that recognizes specific images in photos for easy searching is also expected to be included. There will be no need to separately capture images or input them into a search bar. This feature can be used in everyday life, such as when you want to know which brand a celebrity’s outfit is from or where to buy interior accessories seen in a store. According to IT specialized foreign media like Android Headlines, this feature is called ‘Circle to Search’, meaning a circle for searching. Drawing a circle on an image with the S Pen will enable quick searches.
Furthermore, AI functions that summarize and organize web page content and edit documents in various tones are also anticipated. Handwritten notes made with the S Pen can be converted into various formats such as emails or invitations, improving work efficiency. The camera is said to include features like zoom up to 150x and generative edit functions that automatically fill or erase photo backgrounds.
‘Galaxy Unpack’ on the 17th... Apple’s ‘Unprecedented Discount’
Samsung Electronics will hold a Galaxy Unpack event at 10 a.m. on the 17th in San Jose, California, USA, to unveil the Galaxy S24 series. It is widely predicted that the relatively high-spec Plus and Ultra models will be equipped with the ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’ application processor (AP), while the base S24 model sold in Korea, Europe, and South America will mainly use Samsung’s own ‘Exynos 2400’.
The base and Plus models, which use aluminum materials, will increase the flat display size by 0.1 inches (about 0.25 cm) each, while the Ultra model will adopt titanium material but is expected to have a smaller edge display area compared to its predecessor. There are also expectations that the screen brightness will increase by about 49% to a maximum of 2600 nits compared to the previous model. Regarding the camera, the base and Plus models will support up to 50 million pixels, and the Ultra up to 200 million pixels, with improvements expected in adaptive pixels that maximize photo shooting efficiency.
As industry expectations for the Galaxy S24 rise, competitor Apple has taken steps to counter. Apple plans to offer discounts on the iPhone 15 series, iPads, MacBooks, and more in China for four days starting on the 18th. The iPhone price was reduced by 500 yuan, and some MacBook Air models by 800 yuan. Analysts suggest that Apple is holding discount events in China because domestic smartphones like Huawei and Xiaomi have gained popularity, reducing iPhone sales. Apple will also target the 20-30 age group in Korea by opening its seventh domestic Apple Store, ‘Apple Hongdae’, on the 20th.
