Seocho-gu, 2024 Elementary Orchestra Leading Schools Recruitment

Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su), leading cultural and artistic education for elementary school students, is recruiting the 2024 'Sound of Seocho Orchestra Leading School.'

Started in 2022 and now in its third year, the 'Sound of Seocho Orchestra Leading School' project is an initiative where the district selects one elementary school each year to support orchestra activities, aiming to lower the barriers to classical music for elementary students and provide opportunities to freely showcase their talents.

The district is accepting applications from elementary schools in the area until the 19th of this month to select the third leading school for 2024. One school with the highest overall score will be chosen after reviewing the application forms and project plans.

Jamwon Elementary School was selected in 2022, and Gyodae Affiliated Elementary School in 2023. The children, who have honed their performance skills, have participated as orchestra members in various performances held in Seocho-gu, such as the 'Music Concert on the Way to School,' 'Seoripul Festival,' 'Gangnam·Seocho Culture and Arts Festival,' and 'Seocho Elementary Classical Festival,' showcasing their talents.

A student A from the Gyodae Affiliated Elementary Orchestra, who participated in last year's Seocho Elementary Classical Festival, said, "I was nervous on stage, but I wanted to show my skills as much as I worked hard. It feels rewarding and proud to create harmonies with my friends," sharing their thoughts on the performance.

The school selected in this recruitment will receive a total of 400 million KRW in educational expenses from the district over three years to operate the orchestra. The detailed support areas include ▲ up to 100 million KRW annually for purchasing orchestra instruments ▲ up to 100 million KRW for operating expenses such as creating a cultural arts room for instrument lessons ▲ support for orchestra instrument instructors.

Meanwhile, since 2019, the district has been promoting the 'Seocho Elementary 1 Student 1 Instrument' project to support learning various instruments in all elementary schools in the area, striving to nurture students' artistic talents.

The 'Sound of Seocho Orchestra Leading School' project adds orchestra operation support to this. Leading schools offer children a special experience beyond instrument education, allowing them to participate as orchestra members. The district plans to increase the number of leading schools annually through recruitment, aiming for '1 School 1 Orchestra.'

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, said, "We will ensure that anyone in Seocho-gu elementary schools can experience being an orchestra member," and added, "We will continue to provide generous support to create an educational environment where children can nurture their dreams in various fields."
