The '2024 Cheongsong Ice Climbing World Cup' Successfully Concludes

The 2024 Cheongsong Ice Climbing World Cup, held in Cheongsong-gun (Governor Yoon Kyung-hee), the mecca of mountain sports, concluded its three-day journey.

This competition featured over 100 athletes from about 16 countries, including the world’s top-ranked players from 1st to 8th in the world rankings, as well as Korea’s representatives Lee Young-geon and Shin Woon-seon. They fiercely competed for the championship trophies in both difficulty and speed events. In the speed category, Namdu Kerlen (Mongolia) took first place in the men’s division, and Aneta Ruzek (Czech Republic) won the women’s division. In the difficulty category, Kwon Young-hye (Republic of Korea) won the men’s division, and Shin Woon-seon (Republic of Korea) claimed first place in the women’s division.


Notably, Korean athletes made their mark in all categories, with Yang Myung-ok placing third in the men’s speed division and Lee Young-geon securing second place in the men’s lead division, further proving that Korea is a powerhouse in ice climbing.


The Cheongsong Ice Climbing World Cup has been held by Cheongsong-gun since 2011, making this year its 12th anniversary as the first event of its kind in Asia.


With the participation of the world’s top athletes, it has become a significant opportunity to promote Korea’s winter sports and has greatly contributed to revitalizing the local economy.


During the event, there were exhibitions of Cheongsong flower stones and Cheongsong white porcelain, promotions of tourism and local agricultural specialties, a tasting corner for Cheongsong apples, and photo spots for spectators. Around the competition venue, visitors were captivated by ice sculpture exhibitions, traditional winter foods, celebrity performances, prize draws, 4D climbing experiences, sky art, and various other interactive events and attractions.


Governor Yoon Kyung-hee said, “I am pleased that this event has not only expanded the base of mountain culture but also widely promoted Cheongsong as the mecca of mountain sports worldwide. We will continue to provide support and efforts so that Korea can stand tall as a global powerhouse in ice climbing.”
