Samsung Electronics' Kyung Kye-hyun: "The Topic of Conversations with Customers Met at CES is AI"

Kyung Kye-hyun, President of Samsung Electronics DS Division
Shares Reflections on CES via Social Media
"A New Opportunity Has Come in the AI Era," Emphasizes

"Most conversations with customers met at CES (the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition) were about AI."

On the 14th, Kyung Kye-hyun, President of Samsung Electronics' DS Division, shared his impressions of this year's CES through his social media account. It is known that President Kyung visited various exhibition halls and held meetings with clients in Las Vegas, USA, from the 9th to the 12th (local time), during CES 2024.

In his post, President Kyung explained, "When ChatGPT appeared and public cloud providers reduced investments in normal servers while increasing investments in GPU (graphics processing unit) servers, I once believed it was due to limited budgets and that investments in normal servers would resume over time." He added, "But that did not happen. Why? Because a fundamental change occurred in computing."

He continued, "Normal servers were for traditional retrieval systems that find specific information from existing data," and added, "however, the computing environment has shifted to generative systems that create new information based on given inputs."

He also said, "For a system to be generative, memory and compute cells must be interconnected," and explained, "Since integrating memory and compute into a single chip is expensive, technologies like HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), GPU/accelerators, and 2.5D packaging have emerged."

However, he noted, "Because the distance between memory and compute is still large, attempts to reduce this gap will continue with higher capacity HBM, faster interfaces, PIM (Processing In Memory) HBM, and customized buffer HBM," and added, "These efforts that started in servers will evolve into PCs and smartphones."

President Kyung described this as "a new opportunity" and defined it as "the era of AI." He also predicted, "Although trillion-parameter large language models (LLMs) have appeared, artificial general intelligence (AGI) may require quadrillion-parameter models," and said, "This may just be the beginning."

Meanwhile, through photos posted on his social media account, President Kyung revealed that he visited the dome-shaped large performance venue 'Sphere' in Las Vegas, USA. The photos he posted included captured scenes from the documentary film 'Postcards from Earth,' which can be seen at the Sphere.
