Statistics Korea Conducts November Household and Housing Basic Survey... Preparing for the '2025 Census'

100th Anniversary of the Population and Housing Census

Statistics Korea announced on the 15th that it will conduct the "2024 Basic Household and Housing Survey" in November to prepare for the "2025 Population and Housing Census."

The Basic Household and Housing Survey began in 2014 and is conducted every five years in the year preceding the Population and Housing Census (a 20% sample survey) to enhance the accuracy of the field survey for the Population and Housing Census.

Through this survey, Statistics Korea will investigate 14 items related to households and dwellings, including ▲type of dwelling ▲vacancy status ▲presence of rooftop rooms or (semi-)basements ▲total number of rooms ▲number of residential facilities ▲whether it is an agricultural, forestry, or fishery household, among others.

The results of the Basic Household and Housing Survey will be used as fundamental data for ▲setting survey districts for the Population and Housing Census and the Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishery Census ▲improving the quality of administrative data-based registration censuses (housing sector) ▲establishing population and housing policies and related research.

Meanwhile, Statistics Korea stated that the "2025 Population and Housing Census" will mark the 100th anniversary of the Population and Housing Census. The Population and Housing Census, the nation's foremost basic statistical survey, originated from the national tax survey in 1925.

Lee Hyung-il, Commissioner of Statistics Korea, said, "The 2024 Basic Household and Housing Survey is the first step toward the successful implementation of the 100th anniversary Population and Housing Census," and added, "We ask for the active cooperation of the public so that your valuable responses can become the cornerstone of Korea's new 100 years."
