Prosecutors Demand 5 Years Imprisonment for Broker Involved in 'Investigation Cover-up and Personnel Favor Requests'

The prosecution has demanded a 5-year prison sentence for a case broker accused of receiving a large sum of money from a fraud suspect under the pretext of "covering up an investigation."

On the 11th, Judge Kim Yong-shin of the Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 8 held a sentencing hearing for Seong (62) and another broker Jeon (63), who were indicted for violating the Attorney-at-Law Act.

The prosecutor requested a 5-year prison term and a fine of 1.539 billion won for Seong, considering the severity of the crime. For Jeon, the prosecution sought a 3-year prison sentence and a fine of 141.5 million won.

They were charged with receiving approximately 1.854 billion won in money and valuables from Tak (44), a suspect in a cryptocurrency investment fraud case, between January 2020 and August 2021.

Seong and Jeon allegedly took money from Tak under the pretense of personnel and petition fees, promising to help him avoid investigation risks while he was under investigation by the prosecution and police. Seong, who had built relationships with high-ranking police officers for over 20 years, is suspected of demanding "investigation cover-up" or "investigation reduction" by giving money to these officials.

Despite having a prior prison sentence, Tak was investigated without detention by the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, Gangnam Police Station in Seoul, and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

On this day, Seong made a final statement, saying, "I am reflecting and regretting my actions," and added, "I will pay the price for my crimes and live serving society."

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the 6th of next month.
