Gwangju Apartment Collapse Accident 2nd Anniversary Memorial Ceremony

The Gwangju Metropolitan City Party of the Democratic Party of Korea pledged to work towards creating a safer Republic of Korea while commemorating the 2nd anniversary of the apartment collapse accident in Seo-gu, Gwangju.

On the 11th, the Democratic Party's Gwangju City Party stated in a press release, "It has been two years since the Hwajeong-dong I-Park collapse disaster occurred," adding, "We mourn the six workers who lost their lives in the I-Park collapse accident and extend our deepest condolences to their bereaved families."

They continued, "According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's investigation, the cause of the disaster was overall poor construction, including unauthorized changes in construction methods and failure to follow the design," and added, "Nevertheless, those responsible for causing the accident continue to shift blame onto each other in court without showing remorse."

Furthermore, they emphasized, "The process of holding the construction company and those responsible accountable is dragging on, and the bereaved families continue to swallow their tears endlessly," stressing, "The primary purpose of the state is to protect the lives and safety of its citizens."

They also stated, "Following consecutive collapse disasters, the Democratic Party has taken the lead in proposing legislation for public safety and preparing support measures for prospective residents," adding, "We promise to make greater efforts to protect the safety of the people under the principle that, when it comes to safety, it is better to be excessive than insufficient."
