Cardiac Arrest Patients Can Double Survival Rate with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will operate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training throughout the year to help residents respond correctly in emergency situations.

The survival rate of cardiac arrest patients when CPR is performed by a layperson was 12.2% (as of 2022), which is more than 2.1 times higher than when CPR was not performed (5.9%). CPR is essential knowledge to protect life and safety in daily life. Nevertheless, only 29.3% of laypersons have performed CPR, highlighting the importance of education to improve emergency response capabilities.

The training targets residents of Geumcheon-gu aged 10 and older or workers at workplaces located in Geumcheon-gu. The training consists of a 2-hour session including ▲ CPR theory ▲ practice using a mannequin ▲ how to use an AED. A certificate of completion is issued to those who finish the training.

The training is conducted at two institutions: Geumcheon-gu Public Health Center (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and Parkmi Health Branch (second Monday of every month). Those who wish to participate can check the monthly schedule on the Geumcheon-gu Office Public Health Center website under ‘News’ and apply by phone.

The district plans to conduct on-site, tailored training by visiting schools, institutions, clubs, community centers, and other organizations after surveying their needs.

Additionally, to protect precious lives through rapid response in emergencies, the district has installed AEDs in convenience stores, along the Anyangcheon Stream, and in public parking lots, all accessible 24 hours a day.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Through this training, I hope residents can provide help to someone by taking quick emergency action when emergencies occur,” and added, “We will continue to prepare CPR training courses, so we encourage many to apply.”
