Yoo Cheol-hwan, a lawyer who has dedicated himself to representing socially vulnerable groups, has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission.

Appointee Yoo was born in 1960 in Dangjin, Chungnam, and graduated from Dongseong High School in Seoul and the College of Law at Seoul National University. He passed the 24th Judicial Examination and worked as a judge for 22 years.


Yoo, who was diagnosed with level 4 physical disability due to polio in childhood, is said to have decided to become a legal professional to help minorities including people with disabilities. His father is former National Assembly member Yoo Je-yeon, who founded Sinpyeong Middle and High Schools in Dangjin.


Yoo has been actively involved in various political parties. During the 2017 presidential election, he served as the Special Commissioner for Human Rights in Ahn Cheol-soo’s People’s Party campaign. In 2019, he joined the Liberty Korea Party and served as the Vice Chairman of the Chungnam Provincial Party and Head of the Legal Support Group.
