River Plogging Campaign · Clean School Classroom Forest Project
Spreading Environmental Protection Culture
The flagship products of Coway, a home appliance company, are water purifiers and air purifiers. Clean water and air are inseparable. This is why the company continuously conducts campaigns to remind employees and customers of the value of clean water and air and to spread a culture of environmental protection. These campaigns naturally connect to health management as well. The number of participants running along riversides and diving in the sea continues to increase.
On the 11th, Coway announced that the number of participants in last year's 'River Plogging Campaign' increased by 41% compared to the previous year. Since 2022, Coway has been conducting this campaign annually with customers. It is an eco-friendly event where participants pick up trash while running or walking near bodies of water, designed to keep rivers and seas clean and to spread a culture of environmental protection in daily life.
Last year, the campaign was held for about a month starting in July, with participation not only from Coway employees but also customers who joined with their children, pets, and families. At Songjiho Beach in Goseong, Gangwon-do, a volunteer group of employees with diving certifications conducted 'ploving' volunteer activities, collecting underwater trash such as PET bottles, toothbrushes, fishing nets, buoys, and fishing gear. Beyond the meaning of protecting nature, the campaign also aimed to raise awareness of the value of clean water.
As a practice for clean air, there is the 'Coway Clean School Classroom Forest' project. This activity donates air-purifying plants to elementary schools to instill eco-friendly awareness in children, the future generation. It provides an educational environment where students can be close to plants and conducts environmental education to help them recognize the importance of environmental protection.
Starting with Guro Nam Elementary School in Seoul in June 2022, Coway has donated air-purifying plants to five elementary schools nationwide up to last year. Students transplant the plants into pots made from leftover fabric from disposable masks and recycled transparent PET bottles, forming a relationship with their 'companion trees' and taking responsibility for their care and growth. Alongside this, they also conducted simple air purifier-making education to learn about the principles of air purifiers and the importance of clean air.
As part of the Clean School Classroom Forest project, Coway began a project in November 2022 to create a 3,801㎡ forest in the Bangnae-ri area of Naemyeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do. Trees are planted corresponding to the number of students participating in environmental education. This is to sustain students' participation and interest in environmental protection. Coway plans to continuously expand the number of schools participating in the Clean School Classroom Forest and, in connection with this, create forests in areas severely damaged by deforestation.
A Coway representative said, "We are conducting various eco-friendly ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) projects to convey the preciousness of nature and the value of clean water and air," adding, "This year as well, we plan to carry out eco-friendly projects involving customers and employees so that many people can practice environmental protection in their daily lives."
