Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 8th that it has completed the ‘Daein-dong Food Culture Street, Yesuldamgil Project’ development centered around Daein-dong (around Guseong-ro 194beon-gil), one of the region’s representative commercial districts.

Since being selected in 2021 for the ‘Ministry of the Interior and Safety Alley Economy Recovery Support Project’ contest, Dong-gu has been promoting the ‘Yesuldamgil Project’ with the goal of revitalizing the depressed alley commercial district, recovering the livelihood economy, and activating the local economy.

This project was carried out through continuous exchanges with the Yesuldamgil Win-Win Council (Chairman Lee Yang-seop), composed of merchants, residents, and community activists of the Daein-dong Food Culture Street, and proceeded with a total of 3 units and 16 detailed projects including win-win cooperation, recovery support, and competitiveness enhancement.

The win-win cooperation projects focused on developing substantial content that merchants and visitors who make up the alley economy can directly experience and consume, such as ▲merchant capacity-building education ▲production of Yesuldamgil promotional videos ▲creation of commercial district maps.

The recovery support projects included ▲installation of smart streetlights ▲creation of safe pedestrian paths ▲establishment of fire prevention systems, renovating and repairing the infrastructure of the old alleys to create a safe and bright environment, contributing to making the commercial district a place people want to walk and visit, which received positive responses from merchants and residents.

Following this, the competitiveness enhancement projects, such as ▲establishment of street art galleries ▲design-themed development ▲commercial district archiving ▲hosting art markets and concerts, contributed to establishing a unique cultural identity of Yesuldamgil (meaning ‘a street filled with art’) by combining alleys and art.

Mayor Im Taek of Dong-gu said, “Through the ‘Yesuldamgil Project’ carried out over the past three years, I hope that local small business owners struggling due to the economic downturn can gain differentiated competitiveness,” and added, “We will closely cooperate between the public and private sectors so that Daein-dong Yesuldamgil can establish itself as a representative alley of Dong-gu, attracting residents as well as visitors from outside.”
