The Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation announced on the 8th that it will hold a special exhibition titled "GO, GO! World Travel in Commemorative Coins" from the 9th to the 25th of next month at the special exhibition hall of the Currency Museum located in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon.
The special exhibition was prepared through a collaboration between the Minting Corporation and Poongsan Hwadoyanghaeng. At the exhibition hall, visitors can see over 200 artistic and unique coins from 13 countries themed on France’s "The Little Prince," the UK’s "007 James Bond," Canada’s "Anne of Green Gables," and more. Admission is free.
In particular, a currency specialist curator will be stationed at the exhibition to provide easy-to-understand explanations about the history and manufacturing methods of the exhibited coins.
Visitors can also participate in an event where they stamp a world travel experience commemorative passport-style leaflet and receive souvenirs.
The Minting Corporation plans to conduct expert seminars, overseas field trips, and research projects for the domestic introduction of "artistic commemorative coins," starting with this exhibition.
Artistic commemorative coins are legal tender coins with face values, issued using precious metals such as gold and silver.
They are also used as a means to promote national brand images by featuring symbols such as native animals and plants, like the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Austrian Philharmonic, Australian Kangaroo, and Chinese Panda.
Among collectors, these coins attract attention because they are legal tender officially guaranteed by the government and central bank for purity and weight.
For these reasons, many countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, Australia, and China promote artistic commemorative coin projects.
On the other hand, in Korea, while general commemorative coins are issued to celebrate national events, artistic commemorative coins are not issued separately.
Sung Chang-hoon, president of the Minting Corporation, said, "This special exhibition will be a rare opportunity to see world rare commemorative coins all in one place," adding, "Visitors to the exhibition hall will be able to experience unique and exotic attractions that are usually hard to encounter."
