Gwanak-gu Mayor Park Jun-hee Introduces Eco-Friendly Street Sweepers and Low-Floor Safety Cleaning Vehicles to Improve Safety and Work Environment for Environmental Officers in Creating a 'Clean Living Space Gwanak'... Environmental Officers Welcome the Move Enthusiastically
Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) is drawing attention by improving the working environment of environmental public officers responsible for street cleaning.
The district has introduced eco-friendly street sweepers capable of vacuum suction cleaning without noise and dust, enhancing cleaning efficiency while also improving the working conditions of environmental public officers.
Additionally, to prevent safety accidents among environmental public officers, a rear low-floor cleaning vehicle has been introduced. Notably, this cleaning vehicle features a separate boarding area for environmental public officers between the driver's seat and the waste loading compartment.
Lee Seon-gyu, Director of the Cleaning Administration Division, stated, "This is the result of District Mayor Park Jun-hee's determination to improve the working environment of environmental public officers, the main actors in street cleaning, to create a pleasant ‘Clean Living Space Gwanak’," adding, "We will continue to promote facility modernization projects to improve cleaning work environments."
Gwanak-gu Introduces Eco-Friendly Street Sweepers to Increase Street Cleaning Efficiency... Improves Working Environment for Environmental Public Officers
Gwanak-gu purchased eco-friendly street sweepers capable of vacuum suction cleaning and water cleaning without noise and dust to enhance cleaning efficiency in densely populated areas and improve the working environment of environmental public officers.
Public officer Jeong Seong-hoon said, “I was shocked when I saw the Gangnam-gu Office cleaning with a sweeper instead of a broom,” and added, “I’m very glad that the district purchased street sweepers and gave me the opportunity to use them.” He continued, “When I clean around Nakseongdae, the southern part of the Ring Road, and Inheon Market early in the morning, many citizens ask ‘What is this?’ showing interest. As an environmental public officer, my self-esteem has risen and cleaning efficiency has improved. Above all, it does not strain joints like wrists, shoulders, and waist, so I hope many colleagues in other Seoul districts will also use it.”
Another public officer said, “There were times when pedestrians complained about dust caused by broom sweeping, which was difficult, but using the street sweeper made street cleaning easier and greatly improved work results.”
The street sweepers introduced by Gwanak-gu operate on rechargeable batteries without carbon emissions. They produce no noise or dust when vacuuming cigarette butts, flyers, and other trash, and also have a water cleaning function. Additionally, they can absorb fine dust. The large filter inside the sweeper captures fine dust, making it very effective in removing fine dust, a chronic environmental problem in urban areas.
The district recently deployed and operates a total of three street sweepers: one each near Sillim Station sidewalks and shopping streets, Siheung-daero area, and Bongcheon-ro area. The district expects these street sweepers to be very effective not only in habitual illegal dumping areas such as cigarette butts and flyers but also on streets where fallen leaves accumulate heavily in winter.
In particular, it is expected to improve the working environment of environmental public officers who have been exposed to a lot of dust and pollutants due to broom sweeping during street environment maintenance.
Along with this, it can also relieve shoulder pain caused by long-term broom cleaning. District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “The introduction of eco-friendly street sweepers has positive effects both on improving street environments for residents and on the working environment of environmental public officers,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to create a pleasant living space for residents through advanced cleaning administration.”
Gwanak-gu Introduces Low-Floor Safety Cleaning Vehicles to Improve Working Environment for Environmental Public Officers
The district’s existing cleaning vehicles for collecting recyclable waste had high footboards at the driver’s and passenger’s seats. As a result, environmental public officers who frequently get on and off for cleaning suffered knee and back injuries and were exposed to safety accident risks while hanging on the rear of the cleaning vehicles during movement.
To prevent safety accidents and improve the working environment for environmental public officers, the district has introduced two rear low-floor cleaning vehicles, which began operation this year.
The newly introduced rear low-floor cleaning vehicles have a separate boarding area for environmental public officers between the driver’s seat and the waste loading compartment, allowing easy boarding and alighting. Safety switches are installed on the vehicle sides, and safety stop bars are installed at the rear to prevent entrapment accidents involving environmental public officers.
Moreover, safety devices for drivers are also prepared. An around-view monitoring system that provides a 360-degree three-dimensional view around the cleaning vehicle is installed, eliminating driver blind spots and securing visibility. Drivers can monitor waste collection work around the vehicle and the vehicle’s operation status in real time to prevent safety accidents. Environmental public officers can also minimize injuries during waste collection work.
Additionally, to actively respond to various safety risks such as falls, the district replaced four aging cleaning vehicles with new ones and equipped existing vehicles with around-view monitoring and rear proximity sensors.
District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “We introduced new low-floor cleaning vehicles to improve the working environment and prevent safety accidents for environmental public officers who work hard to maintain a pleasant living environment in the area,” adding, “The district will continue to make various efforts to improve employees’ working conditions and provide high-quality administrative services to residents.”
