74.7% Revenue Share of Two Movies
The movie "Noryang: Sea of Death," which depicts General Yi Sun-sin's Battle of Noryang, topped the box office during the New Year holiday.
On the 2nd, the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network reported that from the 30th of last month to the day before, over three days, "Noryang: Sea of Death" (directed by Kim Han-min) attracted 909,433 viewers, ranking first at the box office. Its revenue share was 38.7%. Since its release on the 20th of last month, it has drawn a cumulative audience of 3,728,412.
The film is the final story in director Kim Han-min's Yi Sun-sin trilogy, portraying General Yi Sun-sin's last battle to completely annihilate the Japanese forces retreating from Joseon after seven years since the outbreak of the Imjin War. It ranked first at the box office over the three-day holiday and maintained the top spot on weekend box offices for two consecutive weeks since its release, approaching the milestone of 4 million viewers.
"Seoul Spring" (directed by Kim Sung-soo), which deals with the December 12 military coup, attracted 845,437 viewers during the same period, ranking second. Its revenue share was 36.0%. Released on the 22nd of last month, it has drawn a cumulative audience of 12,117,181, surpassing "Tae Guk Gi" (2004) to become the 19th highest-grossing domestic release in history. It is the 15th among Korean films.
The film has continued its momentum into its seventh week, attracting over 100,000 daily viewers for 41 consecutive days since its release. It broke the previous record of 40 days held by "Miracle in Cell No. 7." It also surpassed the records of major 10-million viewer films such as "The King and the Clown" (39 days), "Ode to My Father" (35 days), "Avatar" (34 days), "Masquerade" (32 days), "Assassination" (29 days), "Veteran" (29 days), "The Attorney" (28 days), and "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" (27 days).
The animated film "New Dimension! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie: Superpower Showdown ~Fly, Handmade Kimbap~" followed in third place with 179,166 viewers.
DC Studios' new release "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" attracted 166,381 viewers, ranking fourth, while the animated film "Trolls: Band Together," seen by 85,592 viewers, remained in fifth place.
Sixth place went to "Dotty and the Eternal Tower," seventh to the animated film "Pororo the Movie: Super Star Adventure," eighth to director Hirokazu Kore-eda's film "Monster," and ninth to "Octonauts Above and Beyond: Bird, Sound the Octo-Alert!"
With the release of Disney's 100th anniversary animation "Wish" on the 3rd, the rankings are expected to change. As of 8:30 AM, the film holds a real-time reservation rate of 33.5%, ranking first. The number of reserved tickets is 82,199.
