Ministry of Science and ICT to Fully Launch Frontier Challenge R&D from Next Year

490 Billion KRW Invested Over 5 Years

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 29th that it will launch the 'Limit-Challenge R&D Project,' which pursues research and development (R&D) with a high possibility of failure but great expected benefits upon success, starting next year.

The Limit-Challenge R&D will be operated in a way that assigns private experts as responsible Project Managers (PMs) who can be involved in the entire R&D process. The mission planning defined by the responsible PM will be concretized into R&D tasks through open discussions and feedback with researchers, and under the PM's management, the research direction can be flexibly adjusted. The PMs responsible for the projects were appointed in June: Dongho Kim, Principal Researcher at the Korea Institute of Materials Science for materials; Wonchun Choi, Principal Researcher at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology for climate energy; and Eunseong Park, CEO of DC Medical for the bio sector.

The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to officially start the project by announcing research themes selected by each sector's PM, collecting opinions, and holding technical proposal discussions from next year, followed by issuing a call for proposals in the first quarter.
