Standing Tall as Jeonnam's Top Transportation City Municipality
Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do announced that it has achieved an unprecedented feat by winning the top prize in the ‘2023 Sustainable Transportation City Evaluation’ following its nationwide first place in the ‘2023 Public Transportation Policy Evaluation.’
According to the city on the 27th, Yeosu City received the ‘Excellence Award’ in the ‘2023 Sustainable Transportation City Evaluation’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, moving up one level from 2022. This marks the city’s seventh consecutive year of winning an award in this evaluation and achieving the highest ranking within Jeollanam-do.
The ‘Sustainable Transportation City Evaluation’ is an assessment conducted annually since 2014 under the 「Sustainable Transportation and Logistics Development Act」, recognizing local governments that implement outstanding policies in the transportation sector for sustainable development.
The evaluation was conducted on 73 cities with populations over 100,000, divided into four groups based on size and characteristics, assessing 30 transportation indicators across environmental, social, and economic sectors. Yeosu was included in the group of cities with populations under 300,000 and competed against 37 cities to win the Excellence Award.
This year, Yeosu received high marks for actively promoting policies such as improving traffic congestion, securing eco-friendly transportation means like electric and hydrogen low-floor buses, establishing a safe transportation system, and ensuring mobility rights for transportation-vulnerable groups.
In particular, the city’s policy efforts were further recognized with the ‘Development Award,’ given to the city that showed the highest reflection of previous year’s policy evaluation efforts in the current year’s status, marking a double celebration.
Jung Su-hwan, head of the Transportation Division, said, “We are very pleased that Yeosu City’s various sustainable transportation policies, including revitalizing public transportation, walking, and cycling, transitioning to eco-friendly transportation, improving traffic congestion, and establishing a safe transportation system, have yielded such positive results.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to provide safe and sustainable transportation services that citizens can truly feel.”
