On the morning of the 23rd, at an army unit in Cheorwon, Corporal A struck a fellow soldier on the head with the butt of a firearm. The assault occurred during the process of exchanging weapons for a shift change.

The victim was immediately transferred to a civilian hospital, where the wound was deep enough to require 25 stitches.

The army stated, "The perpetrator was immediately separated," and added, "The military investigative agency will thoroughly investigate the exact circumstances of the incident and take strict action."

Meanwhile, assaulting a fellow soldier within the military can result in a maximum prison sentence.

In addition, on October 24, 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that a discharged soldier who assaulted a comrade during guard duty must be tried in a military court, not a civilian court.
