American Woman Gives Birth to Twins Conceived in Two Separate Uteri... "1 in a Million Chance"

Simultaneous Pregnancy in Two Uteri, Extremely Rare

An American woman with two uteruses safely gave birth to twin daughters, each conceived in a separate uterus, after 20 hours of labor.

According to the British BBC and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) hospital on the 23rd, Kelsi Hatcher (32), who lives in Alabama, USA, delivered the first baby naturally at 7:45 PM on the 19th (local time), and about 10 hours later, at around 6 AM the next day, she gave birth to the second baby via cesarean section.

The hospital stated that both babies were born healthy, weighing 3.4 kg and 3.3 kg respectively.

Hatcher was diagnosed with double uterus at age 17, meaning she has two separate uteruses. This condition occurs in 0.3% of women, but the likelihood of pregnancy occurring in both uteruses is estimated to be one in a million. Even then, the chances of miscarriage or premature birth are high.

Because this is an extremely rare case, the hospital reportedly doubled all related records, monitoring, and staff until delivery.

Professor Richard Davis, the attending physician who successfully led the delivery, explained, "These babies are fraternal twins, each developing from separate eggs fertilized by different sperm, occupying one uterus each. Unlike typical twin pregnancies, they had extra space to grow and develop." He added, "Two babies were in the same womb, but they were just living in different apartments."

Hatcher already has three children: two daughters and one son, aged 6, 4, and 2 years old.
