20s Male Homeroom Teacher at an Elementary School in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do
Over 70% of Female Students in the Class Sexually Harassed
A male homeroom teacher in his 20s at an elementary school in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, is under police investigation on charges of sexually harassing female students. Initially, five students reported being victims, but after the school conducted its own investigation, the number of affected children increased to 10.
The Women and Juvenile Investigation Unit of the Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency is investigating Mr. A, a man in his 20s, without detention on charges of molesting female students at an elementary school in Pocheon City (violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act).
Mr. A is accused of forcibly molesting female students in his homeroom class while working as a homeroom teacher earlier this year. Initially, five students reported the abuse to the police, but the school's investigation revealed that the number of victims had risen to 10, which accounts for more than 70% of the entire female class.
One victim told a broadcasting station in an interview, "He pressed his waist very close to the side and rested his face on my chest," adding, "I was so shocked that I couldn’t do anything and was frozen."
Another student said, "He tried to kiss me, so I said no, but later the teacher asked if I wouldn’t even kiss my dad."
Meanwhile, some parents claim that the school engaged in secondary victimization. They allege that the offending teacher was present when some students were writing their statements. Additionally, the teacher reportedly collected petitions from the students.
The school later separated the offending teacher from the victims and is currently under police investigation for possible manipulation of statements.
The education office dismissed teacher A from his position on the 8th. The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the case based on additional victim testimonies.
Meanwhile, in August, a male homeroom teacher in his 30s in Busan, who sexually harassed two elementary students after calling them in on weekends for violating school rules or claiming they needed weekend supplementary classes for not doing homework, was sentenced to six years in prison in the first trial but had his sentence reduced to five years on appeal.
The court stated, "Although belatedly, he admitted his wrongdoing and did not use direct violence or threats against the victims," and added, "He was forgiven by one victim, and considering that the other victims did not reach an agreement and criminal deposit was made, this was taken into account."
