Dobong Seowon Reconstruction Gains Momentum... Targeting Construction Start in 2025 Site of Yeongguksa Temple and Dobong Seowon Academy

Dobong-gu (District Mayor Oh Eon-seok) has gained basic design funding for the reconstruction of Dobong Seowon from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, giving new momentum to the project.

The basic design for the reconstruction of Dobong Seowon involves creating a preliminary plan that reflects the opinions of a working council composed of multiple parties, finalizing the preservation of historic remains and the reconstruction layout, and submitting it for review to the Seoul City Cultural Heritage Committee.

The district plans to submit the design for review to the Seoul City Cultural Heritage Committee as soon as the basic design is completed. If the review agenda is approved, the project will proceed with detailed design and construction targeted for 2025.

A district official stated, “Since the Seoul city budget has been secured, the district will also allocate design funding to support the reconstruction of Dobong Seowon,” adding, “We will actively incorporate the opinions of the working council and proceed with the reconstruction carefully.”

Earlier, the district completed the formation of the ‘Working Council for the Preservation of Yeongguksa Historic Remains and Reconstruction of Dobong Seowon’ and held its first meeting on the 6th. The working council consists of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the Dobong Seowon Corporation, Dobong-gu, Bukhansan National Park Management Corporation, and Dobong Cultural Center.

During the meeting, each organization exchanged opinions and discussed practical directions for preserving the Yeongguksa historic remains and reconstructing Dobong Seowon.

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “The reconstruction of Dobong Seowon, delayed for over 10 years, can no longer be postponed,” and added, “We will reconstruct Dobong Seowon in a way that harmoniously incorporates both Confucian and Buddhist perspectives so that it can shine even more as a cultural heritage of our district.”

Meanwhile, Dobong Seowon and Gakseokgun were designated as Seoul City Monument No. 28 in 2009 and are cultural heritage assets of Dobong-gu.
