High School Student Makes 'Full Golf Swing' at Delivery Rider... "They Said He's in a Psychiatric Hospital, Not Prison"

"The perpetrator's father appeals to his son's mental health issues"

In the middle of a road in Gangnam, Seoul, an incident occurred where a high school boy swung a golf club at a delivery rider he had never met, sparking public outrage. The victim expressed frustration over the trial process.

On the 21st, an online community called 'Bobae Dream' posted an article titled 'Delivery Rider Golf Club Full Swing Incident.' The post included a screenshot of YouTube comments from Mr. A, who identified himself as the victim of the incident.

Through the YouTube comments, Mr. A said, "The perpetrator is in a psychiatric hospital, not prison, and the perpetrator's father strongly appealed that there was a mental illness issue, resulting in psychiatric hospitalization, and the judge dismissed the case," adding, "Hearing that it was dismissed was really frustrating, and I thought this is why 'random assaults' happen."

He continued, "Many people seem to misunderstand about the motorcycle repair, so to explain: the motorcycle repair cost is 2.6 million won, and the lease fee is 40,000 won per day. That amounts to about 1.2 million won per month (just for the lease fee)," adding, "I was informed by the center that it would take 6 to 8 months to repair the damaged motorcycle parts."

He said, "The expected damage amount was at least over 10 million won for six months of lease fees and repair costs, and I discussed the settlement amount including both property damage and personal injury," adding, "To resolve the issue amicably, I inquired a lot with the insurance company and leasing company about whether the insurance could be transferred or temporarily suspended, but I was told it was not possible."

Mr. A said, "I am a father with a child just over one year old. I know the image of delivery workers is bad, but I am a breadwinner who works hard and tries to earn even a single penny more," adding, "I hope there will be no indiscriminate attacks using the derogatory term 'ddal-bae' (a disparaging term for motorcycle delivery workers)."

Furthermore, he said, "The police are hard to contact, and I have never properly received the case number or status," adding, "There will absolutely be no settlement, and no matter how much settlement money is offered, this kind of person should not be allowed to roam the streets. The issue should be publicized and the law strengthened."

Earlier, the incident sparked controversy after a video titled "In the middle of Gangnam, a student I had never seen swung a golf club and assaulted me, demanding a settlement of 30 million won. But the real problem is" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'That is Black Box' on the 24th of last month.

In the video, Mr. A was passing through an apartment complex in Samseong-dong, Gangnam, at 1:29 p.m. on the 11th of last month. Suddenly, a male high school student appeared in the middle of the road and swung a golf club. Mr. A shouted, "What are you doing right now?" but the student picked up the dropped golf club and calmly left the scene.

The student was arrested on the spot by police nearby 10 minutes later on charges including special assault. According to the police investigation, he stated that he assaulted "for no particular reason."

Mr. A said, "The perpetrator's father apologized on the first day but has not apologized since," adding, "A lawyer has been appointed, and the student was not a first-time offender."

He added, "The lawyer advised to demand a settlement amount of 70 to 100 million won, but I said 30 million won," adding, "The perpetrator's father said he would pay 15 million won. I plan to seek punishment without accepting the settlement."
