The Democratic Party of Korea on the 20th ruled former full-time deputy spokesperson Lee Kyung as disqualified from running in the general election due to a fine imposed for retaliatory driving charges.
On the same day, the party announced the results of the Central Party Public Office Candidate Verification Committee, stating, "Today, we verified this applicant for the Daejeon Yuseong-gu Eul constituency," and "As a result of the verification, we confirmed a criminal record corresponding to party regulations and decided on disqualification."
Former full-time deputy spokesperson Lee was prosecuted in 2021 on charges of retaliatory driving (special intimidation) and was sentenced by the court to a fine of 5 million won. During the trial, he claimed that the person responsible for the retaliatory driving was not himself but a substitute driver, but this was not accepted.
Lee also denied the driving incident on a YouTube channel the day before, saying, "Would I retaliate by driving if I were scared of a female driver at 10 p.m. and wanted to know who she was?"
