Gyeonggi-do to Invest 11 Billion KRW Next Year for Forest Disaster Prevention... Construction of 21 Sabangdams and More Gyeonggi Provincial Government

Gyeonggi Province will invest a total of 11 billion KRW next year to carry out the ‘Sabang Project,’ including the construction of 21 sabang dams to prevent forest disasters.

The Sabang Project involves installing forest disaster prevention structures such as sabang dams or reforesting barren land to prevent large branches or rocks from being washed down the mountain during heavy rains and causing damage.

Gyeonggi Province plans to implement 21 sabang dams, 11 km of stream conservation, and 12 hectares of mountain slope protection in 19 cities and counties including Yongin and Goyang, where landslide prevention effects are significant.

Sabang dams are small dam-like structures installed in mountain valleys that block debris flows and fallen trees during heavy rains, preventing damage downstream.

The stream conservation project reduces the slope of valleys to slow down the water flow and prevent bed erosion. Mountain slope protection refers to planting trees or vegetation on degraded mountains to prevent erosion and soil runoff.

Gyeonggi Province plans to complete administrative procedures by the end of this year for swift project implementation, start the project in March next year, and finish by the end of June before the rainy season.

Meanwhile, to ensure rapid project progress, Gyeonggi Province held a ‘2024 Sabang Project Work Manager Practical Training’ at the Northern Office of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government on the 19th.

Lee Tae-seon, Director of the Gyeonggi Provincial Forest and Greenery Division, stated, "As natural disasters such as localized heavy rains and typhoons caused by climate change are unpredictable, the competency of public officials is crucial," adding, "Next year, we will focus on the Sabang Project in landslide-prone areas around residential zones to protect the lives and property of residents from forest disasters."
