Maintenance Plan Established After Academic Excavation Survey

Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 18th that it will establish a maintenance roadmap for the 'Gwetaegot Bongsu' located in Wonjeong-ri, Poseung-eup, the only site among the historic '5-ro Jikbong' located in Gyeonggi Province.

'Bongsu (烽燧)' was a communication facility during the Joseon Dynasty, installed to notify the central Ministry of War and local authorities of enemy invasions by sending predetermined signals?using torches at night and smoke during the day. Among these, the 5-ro Jikbong started from Dolsan Island in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, and converged at Mt. Mongmyeok (currently Namsan) in Seoul.

The Pyeongtaek Gwetaegot Bongsu is the only historic site located in Gyeonggi Province among the 5-ro Jikbong. It is an important bongsu where the Jikbong moving northward via Manghaesan Bongsu and the Ganbong coming up through Seocheon, Boryeong, Seosan, and Dangjin meet.

Since the exact nature of the Gwetaegot Bongsu has not yet been clarified, the city plans to first conduct an academic excavation survey to confirm the scale of the bongsu and surrounding facilities and to determine its characteristics. The survey is expected to take about 3 to 5 years.

After the academic excavation survey is completed, a maintenance plan for the bongsu will be established based on the findings.

Along with the maintenance plan, the city also plans to prepare ways to utilize the cultural heritage. In particular, to create a space where many citizens can enjoy the city's cultural heritage, the city intends to actively cooperate with related organizations such as the Navy 2nd Fleet and the Korea National Oil Corporation.

Jang Jang-seon, Mayor of Pyeongtaek, said, "Based on this historic site designation, we plan to secure national funding to promote the academic excavation survey," adding, "We will do our best to widely publicize the historical value and significance of Gwetaegot Bongsu and to preserve and utilize the cultural heritage."
