Daegu City and the Daegu Climate and Environment Network held a performance report meeting on the 18th for the ‘2023 Carbon Neutral Practice Apartment Competition’ launched in April this year.
The ‘Carbon Neutral Practice Apartment Competition’ is a contest promoted by Daegu City since 2013 to induce greenhouse gas reduction in the household sector, which accounts for 21% of the total greenhouse gas emissions, and to enhance the collective will to practice energy saving. This year marks the 10th edition of the competition.
Apartment residents participating in the competition carry out various carbon neutral practice activities such as forming an operating committee, participating in greenhouse gas diagnosis and consulting, joining the carbon neutral points system, installing energy-saving facilities, and conducting carbon neutral practice campaigns. Afterwards, the performance of each apartment (greenhouse gas reduction achievements, carbon neutral practice activities, installation of low-carbon facilities, etc.) is evaluated, and outstanding apartments are selected and awarded.
This year, among 21 apartments with more than 150 households that applied through a call for applications in April, 9 apartments (9,468 households) were selected through a screening process to participate in the competition. As a result of actively promoting carbon neutral practice activities for about seven months from April to October, approximately 103 tons of greenhouse gases were reduced. This corresponds to the amount of carbon absorbed annually by an 8.1-hectare forest of 30-year-old pine trees, achieving excellent results about 2.2 times higher than last year’s greenhouse gas reduction of 47 tons.
Additionally, the grand prize was awarded to the Housing Management Corporation Daegu Wolseong 3 Complex (Dalseo-gu), the highest award to Raemian Wellist (Nam-gu), the excellence award to Sawol Hwaseong Park Dream 2 Complex (Suseong-gu), and the encouragement award to Housing Management Corporation Daegu Sangyeok Apartment (Buk-gu).
The grand prize winner, Housing Management Corporation Daegu Wolseong 3 Complex, showed excellent reduction performance in all categories including electricity reduction in household and common areas and food waste reduction. It received high evaluations for its high participation rate in the carbon neutral points system and greenhouse gas diagnosis consulting project, as well as actively promoting LED lighting replacement in each household and green remodeling projects.
Raemian Wellist, which received the highest award, was particularly outstanding in education and promotion efforts to improve residents’ awareness, such as promoting ‘Carbon Reduction 1110,’ holding a flea market within the complex, and conducting separate waste disposal education. Sawol Hwaseong Park Dream 2 Complex, which received the excellence award, scored high in energy-saving and efficiency improvement facility installations, including the installation of solar power generation facilities and replacement of all LED lights in the complex.
The encouragement award winner, Housing Management Corporation Daegu Sangyeok Apartment, was notable for achieving a 78% reduction in electricity in common areas, discovering and promoting apartment-specific projects such as Green e-Keeper energy inspections (energy-saving consulting within households), and free bicycle rental services.
Jihyeong Jae, Director of the Environment and Water Resources Bureau, said, “Carbon neutral practice at the community level, such as apartments, will be the driving force for Daegu City to become a carbon neutral city,” and added, “I hope this competition will help citizens deeply empathize with the necessity of carbon neutrality and serve as an opportunity to practice carbon neutrality in their daily lives.”
