32 Passengers, Fortunately No Injuries Reported
A thrilling accident occurred at Universal Studios Japan (USJ), a popular theme park in Osaka, Japan, when a roller coaster in operation suddenly stopped, leaving about 30 passengers hanging in midair.
According to local media including NHK on the 14th, the roller coaster "The Flying Dinosaur" made an emergency stop around 11 a.m. near the summit, approximately 40 meters high.
This ride is themed after the movie "Jurassic Park." It was designed with the concept of a giant pterosaur carrying passengers on its back as it flies. Passengers feel as if they are hanging from the ride, making it known as a particularly frightening attraction.
When the ride made the emergency stop, the 32 passengers on the roller coaster had to wait for rescue while hanging in midair. Later, with the help of staff, the passengers descended via emergency stairs. Although the passengers were terrified, fortunately, no injuries were reported.
USJ stated that the ride automatically stopped due to sensors detecting an abnormal track condition and that a detailed investigation into the cause is underway.
Previously, this ride also suddenly stopped during operation in August 2017. At that time, the roller coaster stopped shortly after departure, leaving all passengers hanging.
USJ explained, "An elementary school student entered a restricted area, and staff took emergency stop measures. It was a necessary action for safety confirmation," adding, "There have been occasional stops in operation before for safety reasons."
