Why Did Seniors with an Average Age of 75 Transform into Painters?

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that from the 18th to the 22nd, a 5-day "Literacy Class Exhibition" will be held on the first floor of the district office.

This exhibition will display over 40 works created by literacy education learners with an average age of 75, expressing their impressions and anecdotes experienced during literacy classes through writing and drawings.

The exhibition will feature poems and paintings such as watercolors and acrylics, including "The Final Consonant Was Wrong" by learner Lee Bong-soon (60), who won the Seoul Metropolitan Lifelong Education Promotion Agency Director's Award at this year's National Adult Literacy Education Poetry and Painting Contest. "The Final Consonant Was Wrong" tells the story of how the learner used to feel embarrassed because of spelling mistakes when texting on a mobile phone, but after attending literacy classes, became confident in writing words with final consonants.

Literacy education refers to learning basic life skills necessary socially and culturally. In Geumcheon-gu, there are nine literacy education institutions, including lifelong learning centers, community centers, and Salgu Lifelong School. Various courses such as practical Korean, practical English, applied mathematics, creative art, music activities, and digital skills are offered.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "Elderly people who could not attend school during their school age due to poverty or being female have become students and realized their dreams," adding, "We will continue to strive so that more residents can enjoy the benefits of lifelong learning."
