"I Will Protect the Ship Called the Democratic Party"
Assemblyman Lee Byung-hoon (The Democratic Party of Korea, Gwangju Dong-gu Nam-gu Eul) recently clearly expressed his opposition and non-participation stance regarding the rumors of a new party formation.
On the afternoon of the 13th, Lee held a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall briefing room and said about the recently discussed new party formation rumors, "There is a high possibility that it will cause a split in the Democratic Party, the main opposition party," adding, "I have no intention to participate in the new party and I oppose it."
He continued, "The general election in April next year is a judgment election on the Yoon Seok-yeol administration," and explained the reasons for his opposition and non-participation by saying, "Only if the Democratic Party remains united without division can we judge the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and set the country right."
Regarding factional politics, he stated, "We must break free from the shadow of outdated factional politics," and argued, "Dividing into pro-Myeong or anti-Myeong factions will not help at all in winning the general election, so efforts should be made to create a united front to judge the Yoon Seok-yeol administration."
Referring to the 2016 People's Party wave, he said, "The conflicts and divisions that Gwangju experienced at that time left deep wounds on the citizens, and because of that memory, they hope for a united Democratic Party," emphasizing, "Since I was elected by the citizens wearing the Democratic Party's colors, I will uphold the Democratic Party ship by following the will of the citizens."
He added, "We must humbly serve the public sentiment even more. We must make every effort possible to judge the Yoon Seok-yeol administration."
