Musk's AI Chatbot 'Grok' Officially Released... Full-Scale Competition with ChatGPT Begins

Grok, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by xAI, an AI startup founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, was officially released on the 7th (local time). The distribution began for paid subscribers just one month after Grok was unveiled. It is expected that fierce competition in the AI market will continue with ChatGPT, Google Bard, and others.

Musk's AI Chatbot 'Grok' Officially Released... Full-Scale Competition with ChatGPT Begins

According to IT media TechCrunch, Grok started rolling out on X (formerly Twitter) late in the afternoon. Grok is available only to users in the United States who subscribe to the $16 per month ad-free plan called "Premium Plus." Grok is being distributed first to long-term subscribers, and the release is expected to be completed next week.

Grok is a generative AI similar to ChatGPT developed by OpenAI. It operates based on Grok-1, a large language model (LLM) developed by xAI. xAI has explained that Grok "has real-time knowledge of the world through the platform and can answer questions that most other AI systems refuse to answer."

When Grok was unveiled last month, Musk also explained that Grok has more advantages than other AIs and possesses a somewhat sarcastic sense of humor. When asked how to make cocaine, Grok initially provided a four-step manufacturing method but then responded, "Just kidding!" and said, "Do not try to make real cocaine. It is illegal, dangerous, and I do not recommend it."

With Grok’s official launch, intense competition is expected among similar generative AIs such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Meta AI from Meta, the parent company of Facebook. In particular, it is anticipated to help X’s monetization efforts, which have been affected by advertiser withdrawals amid recent anti-Semitism controversies.
