Jeonnam Province Puts Full Effort into Becoming a Hub for the Hydrogen Economy

Jeonnam Province is putting all its efforts into becoming a hub for the hydrogen economy.

On the 7th, the province held a report meeting to discover strategic tasks for the hydrogen industry in Jeonnam and discussed the current status of hydrogen industry promotion and future development plans.

Since August 2021, a special task force (TF) dedicated to fostering the hydrogen industry has been established, reviewing annual hydrogen industry achievements and holding meetings to discover new projects.

The task force is centered around the Energy Industry Bureau and consists of related departments in Jeonnam Province, Korea Energy Technology Institute (KENTECH), Jeonnam Technopark, Green Energy Research Institute, and other related organizations.

For the first time, energy officers from 22 cities and counties participated in this meeting to collaborate and further strengthen Jeonnam’s hydrogen industry competitiveness and cooperation.

The meeting proceeded in the order of reviewing the current status of hydrogen industry promotion in Jeonnam Province, the status and future plans of hydrogen industry promotion in Jeonnam and its cities and counties, and discussions on current issues and development plans for the hydrogen industry.

Additionally, the meeting closely examined government policy directions and the results of recent hydrogen-related public project selections, continuing heated discussions on cooperation measures to proactively respond to public calls by early discovery of customized projects.

Baek Kyung-dong, Director of the Future Energy Industry Division of Jeonnam Province, said, “Jeonnam is emerging as the optimal location for the clean hydrogen industry based on the nation’s top renewable energy potential, the world’s largest single petrochemical complex, and the world’s best steel industry in crude steel production capacity.” He added, “If we work together, Jeonnam will leap forward as the national hydrogen industry hub in the era of energy transition.”
