Additional Charges Added for Assaulting Another Affiliated Worker
The prosecution has requested an arrest warrant for the taxi company CEO accused of assaulting and threatening taxi driver Bang Yeong-hwan, who was protesting against wage arrears. Bang set himself on fire during the protest and died while receiving treatment.
On the 7th, the Criminal Division 6 of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Jae-man) announced that they have requested an arrest warrant for Haeseong Transport CEO Jeong Mo on charges including violation of the Labor Standards Act, violation of the Assembly and Demonstration Act, insult, special intimidation, and injury.
Jeong is accused of assaulting Bang during his solo protest on March 1 and threatening him with flowerpots and other objects in August. He is also charged with disrupting the assembly by verbally abusing and cursing Bang and others during a protest in April. Additionally, last month, he is accused of repeatedly beating another Haeseong Transport worker, A, with fists and feet, and in July, threatening driver B through retaliatory driving.
The prosecution confirmed that Jeong committed violence against A less than a month after Bang’s death. Under Article 8 (Prohibition of Assault) of the Labor Standards Act, the prosecution can initiate an investigation directly.
The deceased Bang was the head of the Haeseong Transport branch of the Public Transport Union Taxi Division. He had been conducting a solo protest for 227 days, condemning wage arrears and urging the implementation of a full monthly salary system. On the morning of September 26 at 8:26 a.m., he attempted self-immolation. Bang was transported to the hospital and treated in the intensive care unit but passed away on the morning of October 6.
The pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant substantive examination) for Jeong is scheduled to be held at 10:30 a.m. on the 11th.
