Interpretations Divided in US Political Circles Over Response
Former U.S. President Donald Trump made a provocative statement during an interview with a broadcaster on the 5th (local time), sparking controversy. In response to concerns that he might establish a dictatorship after winning the next U.S. presidential election, he said, "I will not be a dictator except on the first day (of my term)."
On that day, former President Trump was interviewed in a town hall discussion in Iowa with Sean Hannity of the U.S. media outlet Fox News. When Hannity asked, "Do you promise not to abuse power for retribution against someone?" Trump replied, "I will not be a dictator except on the first day."

When Hannity asked again about the meaning of his statement, he said, "I want to close the border," and added, "After that, I will not be a dictator." The audience erupted in cheers at Trump's words. Hannity also responded, "That would not be retribution."
Former President Trump appeared to express a hardline stance on the border issue between the southern United States and Mexico. However, some media outlets expressed concern, saying the 'true intent' of his remarks was unclear.
The political news outlet Politico described the interview by saying, "It is unclear whether his remarks are a promise, a joke, or a threat."
The daily newspaper The New York Times (NYT) noted that, based on his previous experience running the government, Trump could take bolder actions in his next term, stating, "Policy driving has become more sophisticated, and the safeguards have become weaker."
Meanwhile, after former President Trump's remarks became known, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, campaign manager for President Joe Biden, issued a statement saying, "He has clearly stated what he would do if re-elected, and he has declared he would be a dictator from day one," warning, "The American people should believe those words."
