Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, Visits Hwayang Elementary School Site

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has fully opened the playground of Hwayang Elementary School 24 hours a day, prompting District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho to rush to the site to listen to the voices of residents.

Hwayang Elementary School was closed in March due to a decrease in the number of students. The district office and Seongdong-Gwangjin Office of Education signed a business agreement last August to open the closed Hwayang Elementary School from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays as a space for local residents' sports activities and rest. Since then, due to residents' requests to use the facility on weekends and late at night, it was decided to fully open it starting December 1.

The district improved the environment by installing surveillance cameras (CCTV) and emergency bells, maintaining facilities, and supporting cleaning so that residents can use the space safely and comfortably.

From mid-this month, part of the playground will be converted into a parking lot and operated as resident-priority parking until the end of 2025. The parking lot will have 25 spaces.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “I came to check if there are any inconveniences for residents following the full opening of the Hwayang Elementary School playground,” adding, “We will continue to communicate with related organizations and residents to do our best to make the closed Hwayang Elementary School a resting place and cultural sports space where local residents can relax comfortably.”
