A restaurant in Japan that offers a unique service where customers pay to be slapped by staff is gaining popularity.


According to foreign media including the New York Post on the 4th (local time), 'Shachihokoya,' a pub located in Nishiki Sanchome, Nagoya, Japan, provides a service where staff slap customers' cheeks for 300 yen (about 2,670 KRW).

For a special order to designate a specific staff member to perform the 'cheek slap,' an additional fee of 500 yen (about 4,460 KRW) must be paid. One condition is that the customers being slapped can be male or female, locals or tourists, but the staff member delivering the slap must be female.


The promotional video of the place shows female employees wearing uniforms such as T-shirts or kimonos slapping customers' cheeks multiple times with one or both hands. In the video, a male customer is slapped very hard by a female staff member and almost falls from his seat.

The restaurant opened in 2012 but experienced a business crisis. However, it is reported to have gained popularity in Japan through the unique idea of its staff.


A representative of the restaurant said, "The popularity grew so much that we hired additional female staff to handle cheek slap orders before meals."


The restaurant added, "Customers, including men and women, locals and foreigners, all enjoy this experience and express gratitude for the staff's service."


In August, 'Fitbly,' a YouTuber who closed a gym due to COVID-19, also released a video of being slapped for money at a maid cafe during a trip to Osaka, Japan.

Japan operates various unique concept restaurants and cafes. Famous in Korea as well, 'maid cafes' and 'butler cafes,' along with 'gyaru cafes' and 'vampire cafes,' are popular travel spots on social networking services (SNS).


Also, according to foreign media such as the BBC around July, 'insect cuisine' as an alternative food source is gaining attention, and 'Takenoko,' a restaurant selling edible insect dishes in Tokyo, Japan, offers various menus.


Takenoko's menu includes curry with cricket meatballs, sashimi served on silkworm shells, and cider with water beetle extract.
