A gang of teenagers who deliberately caused multiple accidents in Cheonan, Chungnam, and fraudulently collected over 100 million won in insurance money has been caught.

On the 6th, the Cheonan Seobuk Police Station announced that they had arrested a total of 12 people, including two main suspects, A (19) and another, and 10 accomplices, on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud.

All of them were born between 2004 and 2005 and were found to be hometown friends.

A and others are accused of deliberately causing traffic accidents 13 times from November last year to September this year in Buldang-dong and Dujeong-dong, Seobuk-gu, and collecting over 100 million won in insurance money.

The main suspects, including A, took most of the insurance money and shared some with the accomplices.

They specifically targeted cars that crossed the center line or mistakenly entered one-way streets to deliberately cause accidents.

To park their cars in so-called "prime spots" where contact accidents were inevitable, they meticulously prepared by circling the accident sites multiple times.

Suspicious of similar accidents occurring only at specific locations, the insurance company requested an investigation, and the police began analyzing closed-circuit (CC) CCTV footage of the accident sites and launched an investigation.

The police found that most of the gang members were unemployed and had multiple criminal records, including fraud.

They told the police that they did it because "it was easy money," and most of the defrauded insurance money was spent on entertainment expenses.

During the investigation, the police also detected signs that A and others tried to destroy evidence by calling other accomplices.

Also, A tried to silence accomplices by saying, "A guy I know committed over 100 insurance fraud cases, but he denied it, so the investigation couldn't proceed."

Even after the accomplices confessed, the main suspects, including A, showed confidence during police questioning, saying, "I know the law well; will I get arrested for this?"

The police view the crime as serious because A and others received a large portion of the insurance money from accomplices as commissions and attempted to destroy evidence. They plan to apply for arrest warrants for the main suspects, including A.

Meanwhile, according to the Financial Supervisory Service's 2022 insurance fraud detection status, the number of people caught for insurance fraud last year was 102,679. The amount detected reached 1.0818 trillion won.
