Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, and the Central Radio Management Office held an opening ceremony for the ‘Yeongyang Birch Forest Mobile Communication Base Station’ at 2 p.m. on the 6th at Yeongyang Birch Forest (the largest birch forest in Korea).
The event was attended by key figures including Oh Do-chang, Mayor of Yeongyang-gun; Kim Jeong-sam, Director of the Central Radio Management Office; Kim Gi-je, Director of the Daegu Radio Management Office; Nam Song-hee, Head of the Southern Regional Forest Service; Jo Hyun-ae, Director of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Environment and Forest Resources Bureau; Hwang Bo-geun, Head of SKT; Hwang Kyung-hee, Head of KT; Gam Chung-ryeol, Head of LGU+; Ahn Pyeong-won, Head of Dream Tower Solution; Lee Dong-man, Head of KCA Gyeongbuk Headquarters; and about 100 people from various fields in the private sector, government, and public institutions.
‘Yeongyang Birch Forest’ is a key project that Yeongyang-gun is focusing on, but despite the continuous increase in visitors, mobile communication services had not been provided due to a lack of infrastructure such as electricity.
However, to ensure public safety and resolve inconveniences, Yeongyang-gun, the Southern Regional Forest Service, the Central Radio Management Office, and the three mobile communication companies joined forces and actively cooperated with continuous attention, resulting in the opening of the ‘Yeongyang Birch Forest Mobile Communication Base Station.’
This is the first case of resolving mobile communication shadow areas through cooperation among the national government, local governments, and related organizations. It is expected to lay the foundation for ‘Yeongyang Birch Forest’ to become Korea’s premier forest tourism mecca and further eliminate communication inconveniences and safety blind spots for the public.
The opening ceremony proceeded in the order of a welcome speech by Mayor Oh Do-chang, a greeting by Director Kim Jeong-sam of the Central Radio Management Office, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, an on-site opening demonstration performance, and commemorative photo session.
Kim Jeong-sam, Director of the Central Radio Management Office, said, “As a national agency responsible for radio, broadcasting, and telecommunications, we will continue to actively identify areas nationwide, including Gyeongbuk, where mobile communication shadow zones occur due to infrastructure shortages despite high population flow, and strive to prepare for disasters and emergencies and resolve public inconveniences.”
Mayor Oh Do-chang expressed his ambition, saying, “I am very relieved that the safety and convenience of visitors have been addressed through the Yeongyang Birch Forest mobile communication shadow improvement project. We will create the best forest tourism sanctuary that can offer true healing to all Korean citizens, meeting the expectations of those who attended the opening ceremony.”
