"Restoring Democracy and National Normalization: Practicing 'Gwangju-style' Politics"
Jeon Jin-sook, former presidential secretary, officially announced her candidacy for next year's general election. She plans to run as a Democratic Party candidate in the Buk-gu Eul district of Gwangju Metropolitan City.
On the morning of the 6th, Jeon held a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council and stated, "I will break the entrenched politics of vested interests that have failed to show innovation and vision, and take the lead in fierce practice for the restoration of democracy and national normalization. Through politics true to Gwangju, I will bring hope and warmth to the lives of citizens."
She continued, "Politics is about fiercely competing over people's livelihoods and designing the future of the nation and the region. Politicians must neither remain silent in reality nor be cowardly before power. I pledge to put citizens' lives at the forefront and act accordingly."
She also explained the 'Great Buk-gu Renovation' through new visions in four areas: space, education, tourism, and industrial complexes for the future of Gwangju and Buk-gu.
Jeon's Great Buk-gu Renovation includes ▲ restoring disconnected urban spaces through transportation system reform and creating development momentum for the old downtown via changes at Gwangju Station ▲ attracting an education development special zone to link Buk-gu’s industry with future human resources ▲ forming tourism killer content by connecting Buk-gu with nearby areas ▲ growing into an industrial mecca through renovation of aging industrial complexes and development of traditional industries.
She said, "Politics that leads the era is politics that embraces the hearts of citizens. When citizens' hearts come together, politics gains strength," and expressed her determination to "stand at the forefront of change in Korean politics and innovation in Honam politics."
She added, "I will advance politics that communicates step by step with citizens, instead of old-fashioned politics involving huge money and mobilized organizations, or politics that lines up for specific individuals or groups."
Jeon Jin-sook, the prospective candidate, served as an administrative officer at the Presidential Secretariat under the Moon Jae-in administration, a public communication committee member of the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development, a member of the 7th Gwangju Metropolitan Council, and head of the Gwangju Social Innovation Promotion Team for Lee Jae-myung’s presidential campaign.
She is currently active as the deputy director of the Democratic Party Women’s Leadership Center and chairman of Bitgoeul Vision Creation Center (policy platform).
